Colorism

This is a topic I wanted to discuss because I have seen quite a few articles mentioning the continued up rise in Colorism and specifically in the entertainment world. Id first like to address what Colorism is, I describe it as color preference within a group of people that have the same nationality. I am going to focus this conversation on African American people, although it is found in other minority races, its a trending topic in the Black community.

My first encounter with colorism actually started as a girl in middle school.  It was something so simple that I didnt realize would become a issue within the black community. I remember being in 7th or 8th grade, and this is the era in my life where I started to like boys and they started to like me back or at least weren’t shy about showing it lol. I am a fair skinned girl so I would fall into the light skin category.  I remember young boys would have the conversation about which type preferred to date light skin or dark skin girls.  It was funny that this was even a topic of conversation but I remember them saying, I prefer light skin girls but I’d date a dark skin girl if she was FINE.  As a child I didnt pay much attention to these young boys comments but they ended up following to Highschool and college.  Now there were guys who indeed liked dark skin girls but it would always have to be explained which made no sense to me for example, they would say something like ” I don’t like light skin girls because they stuck up or think their all that, dark skin girls are cool and down to earth or I like dark skin girls because my mom is dark skin.”  It seemed like it was always a REASON instead of liking all women regardless of color.

I really started to pay attention to Colorism as an adult when it became pretty evident that in today’s society especially in the music industry some of the most heavily promoted entertainers are fair skin, for example: Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Rhianna, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Ella Mai, and these are just to name a few main stream artists.  Don’t get me wrong we have many talented beautiful dark entertainers but how many do we actually see as major headliners? I see some mainstream actresses that are brown skin getting exposure but alot of times its only in the black community such as Gabrielle Union and Issa Rae.  But how many more are great that don’t really get the mainstream exposure? Another example is Khloe Kardashian, she recently had a baby girl, and the father is Black. Her child came out brown skinned instead of the typical fair skin mixed look that many bi-racial babies have.  Her child received criticism from social media on pictures she posted that were comments about her baby being darker than her cousins who were also bi-racial. She had a taste of what it really feels like to raise a black child and some of the negativity we face in our culture.

I watched this documentary on YOUTUBE called – Cake Soap – Skin Bleaching and it covered people in Jamaica bleaching their skin so they can look white or light complexion. Whats sad is that in this film they really believed that the lighter the skin the more acceptable they are even being Jamaican decent where they have naturally dark skin of all shades.  It was sad to see because they reason it became popular was due to a Dance Hall Rapper named Vybz Kartel who bleached his skin and said it was cool, and if you want to be cool too you will use the cake soap.  Its crazy how lyrics in a song or a preference can cause humans to put themselves in danger of their health to be accepted or considered pretty or handsome.  It was very disappointing to see and here is a link if you wish to check it out:

I feel like we are all beautiful in our own way, and what makes you beautiful is your confidence.  You can please everyone and you should not try.  Black is beautiful because of the melting pot of shades and we are so blessed to have so many in our nationality it should be celebrated. Its okay to have a preference, but to say one is BETTER than the other is what I do not agree with.  Preference is personal choice but when one is put on a pedestal over the other that’s when it becomes a issue.  What do you think?

What Really is Free Thought?

I spent sometime this morning watching the TMZ interview with Kanye West and it really made my heart flutter with feeling sorry for him, but also finding a space for understanding what he is trying to convey. Let me start by first saying:  Kanye West from what I know about his career, has been through alot of pain in the past few years.  He morphed into this Hollywood bubble and it has taken him to a sunken place. I feel his actions is a cry for help to pull him out.  In this sunken place he has seen many things and his messaging to us, does not properly allow him to convey the message. Here are a few things that I feel contributed to his depression:

Passing of his mother, Car accident that fractured his face at the start of his career, Fallout with JayZ and Beyonce, the Taylor Swift controversy, Marriage to Kim Kardashian and the body shaming, he now has 3 kids all under the age of 5 years old….being put in a mental hospital, speaking out during the telethon for Katrina, and being criticized by the media just to name a few. We now know he has been put on Opioids and came out the hospital put on even more medication because this is what your told will make you better…..really????  I am sure there is more that we don’t even know about that this man has been through.  It does not matter how much money you have, it wont buy happiness. Hollywood is a fake world and you can easily get sucked in and kicked out and I think this is what he is fighting.

He speaks alot about Free Thought, and unfortunately humans do not have free thought.  We are taught how to feel, think, and live.  If we go against this as a human in today’s society, you are black balled, crazy, mentally ill, or incarcerated because you become a threat to society now. I will use people like TuPac for an example, he use to speak out about issues in the 90’s and injustice. Third led him to his unsolved murder 20 years later. I feel like he has a message but not able to convey it.  His mind is working over time to express how he feels that he speaks in circles or says things that only his mind understands. When he speaks of free thought – I feel he is saying, not living by society or man made standards, but being able to express ones self and belief.  Just because your told the sky is blue, do you have to identify the sky as blue if that’s now how your mind and eyes see it? If you express to the world that its not blue will you be marked as crazy, or ill? If you go against society, YOU are now the problem.  Which is true. Whoever hold the power can dictate whats right or wrong in this society. What Kanye needs to understand is that there are consequences for having FREE Thought.  We are not mentally FREE and never will be.  Yes, he has a platform to rant and reach many people to join this world of free thought, but what he does not get is that MAJORITY of us are working class citizens that will face REAL life CONSEQUENCES IF we try to go against society and create this FREE Thought. Yes in a perfect world I would love to challenge society and speak out about what is right and wrong, slavery, racism, gender-ism, and all the other issues in today’s society, but it doesn’t work like that.  You can get killed, jailed, lose your job. Look at Rachel Dozeal, the lady who was head of the NAACP, she has been black balled, cant find a job outed as a white woman faking to be black.  Although she did alot for the black community, that does not matter.  She went against what society says she is, and is marked as a liar so nothing else matter so of what she has done so far. I watched her Nextflix movie, called Being Rachel….and I learned more about how she became moved by living as a black woman.  She has a story.  She had mental issues from her childhood that morphed her to believe this is how she wanted to live her life.  She was abused etc. I don’t want to go into detail but if you watch, you will understand her story and why she lives her life this way. She is using FREE THOUGHT.  This is her TRUTH to her.  Look at the consequences she is facing for this Free Thought.  That is my problem with Kanye.  Yes I agree lets use LOVE as a way to make the world GREAT AGAIN, but its not our reality. ITS NOT! Love wont solve all because human emotions are not designed for us to do this. I understand he has a message but he is going to face alot of backlash or risk his life.  Many people who go against society, nothing good comes out of it.

Living your life in a bubble, constantly being judged and dealing with non stop criticism can make anyone mentally stressed/crazy.  The human mind is so strong, but can only take so much. I feel like Kanye needs real friends around him to bring him back to the young Chicago boy hungry to rap and send positive messages. If you listen to his first few albums he had REAL messages that we could relate to, especially as an African American.  He spoke to the people, which made us listen and earn a respect of him. After the passing of his mother, I feel he just tried to surround himself with things to take his mind off of the pain and hurt, and he got caught up in this drama of drugs, drinking and fake people.  He married Kim who spends her life in the media, seeking attention, and to be this big reality start in this Hollywood fake worlds, which is everything Kanye West goes against. You look up 7-8 years later and now you have liposuction because Hollywood body shamed you – the one thing that you hated because it killed your mother.  You marry a woman who has alot of plastic surgery done on her body to keep up with the standards of society. You take pictures with the Donald Trump how is racist, lets make America Great again, instead of speaking out on your own campaign, not acknowledging the Republicans or Trump, you play and feed right into it which caused an uproar. I get what he was attempting to do, and don’t feel its from a malicious place, I feel like he is stressed and his mind is working overtime to put a message out that has not been well developed, processed and though through. At this point lets pray for him and hope that he gets the guidance and encouragement he needs to get back to the MUSIC. Thank you for Reading!

Is History Repeating Itself?

As you know yesterday marked the 50 years since the assassination of the late great Martin Luther King Jr. Did you know that he was only 39 years of age? He was killed fighting for what he believe in which was personal rights. Today many brothers are losing their lives for no good reason. Maybe they were minding their own business, or a young kid walking home with a hooded sweatshirt that deems suspicious poses a threat.  There are many more stories we can discuss,  but the question is when does the senseless killing end.  Why don’t people of all color have rights?

Officers are trained to “shoot to disable” not kill.  One officer stated that they “shoot if kill” if they feel its a threat. If this is true, why are there so many African American victims that were shot when there was no way they can pose a threat such as the LaQuan McDonald case in Chicago, where he was shot 16 times walking away from the police. Does it really take 16 shots?  He didn’t even have a weapon. Do you feel African Americans have personal rights today? Was the King’s death in vein? Is history repeating itself? Thank you for Reading!
